Osijek, 14 May 2026 – As part of the Open Days of EU Projects and Open Science Days, first-year students of the Teacher Education Study Programme at the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek were introduced to the RETFOR project and its activities focused on forest ecosystem protection and climate change awareness.
The project presentation was led by project manager Danijel Cestarić, who spoke about the impact of climate change and human activities on forests, highlighting the importance of sustainable management and environmental protection. Students also watched the RETFOR promotional film.
Particular attention was drawn to the presentation of the educational brochure “Doe Jelica in the Spačva-Bosut Forest,” introduced by project communication coordinator Irena Franjić. Created within the RETFOR project, the brochure is intended for preschool children and lower primary school pupils as an educational tool for learning about forests, biodiversity, and environmental responsibility.

Using storytelling as its main educational approach, the publication follows the story of Doe Jelica, helping children understand complex environmental topics in an accessible and engaging way. The brochure also promotes awareness of the connection between people, plants, and animals, while encouraging children to develop a sense of responsibility towards nature.
Students were additionally introduced to the interdisciplinary and methodological value of the publication, including practical ideas for educational activities and children’s first environmental research projects.
The presentation emphasized the importance of linking science, education, and the preservation of natural heritage, while also underlining the role future teachers can play in promoting sustainable development and environmental awareness among younger generations.
