As part of the I.D. Danube project, a three-day training “Education in Water Intervention” was conducted in Novi Sad and Bačka Palanka on 9-11 June 2026 for 25 members of specialist water rescue and intervention teams from the Republic of Serbia.
The training included both theoretical and practical instruction. During the theoretical part, participants were introduced to the topics “Dangers on Large Rivers” and “CEVNI – Signs on Waterways”, as well as to experiences and examples of good practice in the field of interventions on the Danube River. In the practical part of the training, members of the specialist teams carried out exercises and practical tasks using six boats under the expert guidance of members of the Fire and Rescue Units Directorate.
The I.D.DANUBE project not only strengthens the capacities of fire and rescue units but also fosters the establishment of sustainable cooperation between relevant institutions for joint crisis management in the cross-border area. The next steps in the project implementation include conducting joint field exercises of cross-border partners in the border area of Croatia and Serbia. This will enable the practical application of the Action Plan developed through the project, which will serve as a unique guide for future joint interventions in emergency situations on the Danube River, as well as a test of the operational readiness of all participants.
In the context of climate change and the growing need for an efficient crisis response, the Danube — as one of Europe’s most important rivers — plays an increasingly vital role in cross-border cooperation. The project “Interventions on the Danube” – I.D.DANUBE (I.D: HR-RS00034), with a total value of EUR 1,789,074.92, of which the European Union provides EUR 1,520,713.67, represents a significant investment in improving the readiness of fire and rescue forces, as well as disaster safety and resilience on the Danube River. The project implementation started on 1 September 2024, and is planned to run until 28 February 2027.
