Osijek, 28 May 2026 – The opening conference of the Siga2Kazuk project, A Model for the Restoration of Endangered Floodplain Forests Supported by Remote Sensing in the Cross-Border Danube Area, was held at Hotel Zoo in Osijek.
Implemented under the Interreg IPA Croatia–Serbia Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2021–2027, the project has a total value of €914,288.92. It is led by PE Vojvodinašume in partnership with Croatian Forests Ltd. (Hrvatske šume d.o.o.).
The project aims to restore and protect vulnerable floodplain forests along the Danube, with a particular focus on the Siga area in Croatia, which suffered significant storm damage in 2020 and 2023. Through cooperation between Croatian and Serbian partners, the project will develop an innovative forest restoration model using advanced remote sensing technologies.
Project activities include the establishment of pilot sites, demonstration restoration works, procurement of modern equipment, wildlife protection measures, data collection, and the development of a joint digital platform for monitoring and safeguarding forest ecosystems.
Speakers at the conference highlighted the importance of cross-border cooperation, knowledge exchange and the integration of science and technology in environmental protection. They emphasized that the project will strengthen regional capacities for forest restoration, support the use of advanced monitoring technologies, and contribute to the long-term preservation of valuable natural resources in the Danube region.
By bringing together institutions, researchers and forestry experts from both countries, Siga2Kazuk represents an important step toward sustainable management and restoration of floodplain forests for future generations.
