As part of the Interventions on the Danube – I.D.Danube project, a five-day water rescue training course was held last week on the Drina River near Loznica, Serbia. The training was organised by the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Serbia – Sector for Emergency Management, in cooperation with the Fund for European Affairs and Development of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. Its primary objective was to strengthen participants’ knowledge, skills and operational capacities to respond effectively to water-related emergencies.
A total of 12 participants, all members of specialist water rescue teams within the fire and rescue units of the Sector for Emergency Management of the Serbian Ministry of the Interior, took part in the training. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical exercises, they had the opportunity to enhance their expertise in water safety, rescue techniques, and the safe approach to and assistance of persons in danger in aquatic environments. The training also covered the application of appropriate procedures during rescue operations.

Particular emphasis was placed on practical exercises, teamwork, coordination and timely response, all of which are essential for the successful execution of water rescue operations.
This activity contributes to strengthening the preparedness and operational capacities of the relevant emergency response services, while also promoting cross-border cooperation and the exchange of knowledge and experience in risk management and emergency response.
The I.D.Danube project aims to strengthen cooperation, facilitate the exchange of experience and enhance joint capacities across the Danube region, ultimately improving the safety and resilience of the cross-border area. Through activities such as this training, the project helps develop better-trained, better-prepared and more closely connected emergency response teams capable of addressing challenges and risks in aquatic environments.
With a total budget of EUR 1,789,074.92, including EUR 1,520,713.67 in EU co-financing, the I.D.Danube project represents a significant investment in strengthening the preparedness and operational capacities of fire and rescue services, as well as improving safety and disaster resilience along the Danube River.
