On 11 May 2026, the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University in Osijek, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology Osijek (FERIT), hosted the Kick-off conference of the ‘’CySafe SmartMob’’ project, officially titled “Boosting Research and Innovation Capacities in Cybersecurity-oriented and Functional Safety-oriented Smart Mobility.” The event marked the official launch of this international collaboration between FERIT and the Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Novi Sad (Serbia) and gathered around 50 interested participants from the academic and professional community.
The project addresses cybersecurity and functional safety in AI-based transportation systems, with the overall aim of developing safer and more sustainable solutions for modern vehicles. The project leader, Prof. Mario Vranješ, PhD, presented the project’s objectives, planned activities, and expected outcomes, while a representative of the partner institution, Prof. Ivan Kaštelan, PhD, underlined the importance of cross-border cooperation.
CySafe SmartMob builds on a previously established partnership between the two faculties, which in its earlier phase focused on software solutions for modern vehicles and their testing. The current project shifts the emphasis toward the development of systems that are more resilient to cyber threats and technical failures. With a total budget of 822.934,06 EUR, the project runs from 1st February 2026 to 31st January 2028 and is co-financed through the Interreg IPA Cross-border Cooperation Programme Croatia–Serbia.
The direct beneficiaries of the project are FERIT and the Faculty of Technical Sciences, Novi Sad, both of which will strengthen their research and teaching capacities. The project will contribute to enhancing the competencies of academic and research staff, enabling longer-term involvement in innovation-driven research and technology transfer. Its benefits will extend to other higher education institutions through knowledge exchange, as well as to companies through access to additional forms of professional development and participation in joint research activities
